If you’re not ready to leave Vietnam just yet, you may be able to extend your current visa without exiting the country. A Vietnam visa extension lets you stay longer by adding a new permitted duration to your existing visa, stamped directly into your passport. This option applies to single-entry stays only.
Why extend your Vietnam visa?Extending your visa helps you remain in Vietnam legally after your current visa expires, without having to exit the country. It also allows you to:
- Avoid penalties or being blacklisted for overstaying
- Stay in the country instead of applying for a new visa abroad, saving you time and effort.
- Avoid interruptions so you can keep handling personal or business matters in the country.

Visa extension vs visa run
While both visa extension and renewal let you stay longer without leaving Vietnam, there are key differences in what gets updated:
- An extension adds a stay duration stamp to your passport
- A visa run means your passport gets a new visa sticker along with an updated stamp
Before applying, make sure your passport is still valid for at least 6 more months and has at least 2 blank pages.
To extend Vietnam visa, there are the required documents:
